Anxiety Treatment at Faithland Recovery Center

Understanding Anxiety: When Worry Becomes Overwhelming

Everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives, but anxiety disorders create a level of distress and tension that interferes with everyday life. More than 40 million adults in the United States, nearly 1 in 5, live with an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA). Yet anxiety is highly treatable, and effective, compassionate care can significantly improve quality of life.

At Faithland Recovery Center, we understand that anxiety is not “just in your head.” It affects your mind, body, relationships, sleep, and sense of safety. We provide holistic, evidence-based treatment that empowers you to regain control, develop coping skills, and reconnect with a calmer, more centered version of yourself.

A Moment of Relief: The healing power of breath

Imagine Jane, a 36-year-old nurse. Her heart often races for no obvious reason. Her mind spins with worst-case scenarios. At night, she lies awake, replaying conversations and worrying that she has forgotten something important.

During a therapy session at Faithland, as she talks about her fears, a familiar wave hits. Her chest tightens, her hands tremble, and she feels like she might faint.

Her therapist guides her through a simple grounding practice:

“Place one hand on your chest. Slow your breath.
Inhale for four… hold for two…
Exhale for six.”

Within minutes, the dizziness softens. Her thoughts slow. Her heart settles into a normal rhythm. That single moment didn’t “cure” her anxiety, but it created a sense of hope. And for many, that’s where healing begins.

At Faithland, we help people build new tools and embrace the small steps that evolve into powerful and lasting transformation over time.

Common Types of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety doesn’t look the same for everyone. There are several common anxiety disorders, each with its own pattern of symptoms and therapeutic tools:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Ongoing, excessive worry about everyday situations, such as work, health, family, finances, even when there’s no clear reason to be this anxious. People often feel tense, “on edge,” and exhausted.
  • Panic Disorder
Repeated, unexpected panic attacks with intense physical sensations such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or dizziness. Many people begin to fear having another attack and avoid certain places or situations.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
Strong fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected in social or performance situations. This can make everyday activities, like speaking up in a meeting or attending a gathering, feel overwhelming.
  • Specific Phobias
Intense fear of particular objects or situations, such as flying, heights, needles, or certain animals. The fear is usually much bigger than the actual risk, but it still feels completely real in the moment.

These conditions are common and highly treatable. With the right support and tools, many people experience significant relief and regain a sense of confidence and calm in daily life.

Anxiety, Addiction, and Other Mental Health Disorders Often Occur Together

According to a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) report, people with anxiety disorders are about twice as likely to develop a substance use disorder. This can happen for several reasons:

  • Substances may offer temporary relief from anxiety symptoms
  • Chronic stress can increase vulnerability to dependence
  • Withdrawal symptoms can worsen anxiety, creating a difficult cycle to break

In some cases, people managing anxiety may begin to rely on prescribed medications like benzodiazepines and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants in ways that lead to dependence. If you’re living with both anxiety and medication dependence, you’re not alone, and both are treatable.

Anxiety also frequently occurs alongside other mental health conditions:

  • Depression
  • Trauma-related symptoms or PTSD
  • Substance use disorders
  • Insomnia and other sleep problems

When anxiety and these conditions are treated at the same time, people tend to experience better outcomes, faster relief, and more sustainable long-term recovery.

Faithland’s Holistic Approach to Treating Anxiety

Faithland’s philosophy honors the whole person by focusing on mind, body, spirit, environment, and relationships. We combine evidence-based therapies with compassionate care and holistic practices, personalized to help you cultivate greater peace and resilience in navigating life’s challenges.

1. Mind: Evidence-Based Therapies

We use research-backed approaches known to reduce anxiety symptoms, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps people develop new ways to respond to anxious thoughts and limiting behaviours. CBT is considered the gold standard for anxiety treatment. Research over many decades shows that CBT is a highly effective, first-line treatment for anxiety disorders, with dozens of clinical trials and meta-analyses demonstrating significant symptom reduction and lasting improvement.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): works by strengthening emotional regulation and distress tolerance.
  • Mindfulness, breathing andappropriate (CBT approach)
  • Trauma-focused therapies, for anxiety rooted in unresolved experiences

2. Body:  Building a Healthier Body

Your physical state directly affects your emotional state. We help clients improve their overall health and balance through:

  • Nutrition counseling
  • Sleep and circadian rhythm optimization
  • Light movement, stretching, walking programs
  • Yoga, meditation, and breathwork sessions

Our mind and body are part of the same interconnected system. As you learn to soothe and nourish your body, your mind calms and you gain clarity.

3. Spirit: Finding Meaning and Connection

Anxiety often rises when individuals feel disconnected from their values or inner compass.

Faithland offers supportive opportunities for:

  • Self-reflection and work on your purpose
  • Spiritual counseling (non-denominational)
  • Practices aligned with personal beliefs

4. Environment: A Safe Healing Space

Our treatment environment is designed for:

  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Community
  • Nonjudgmental support

Reducing environmental stressors allows your nervous system to settle and focus on healing.

5. Relationships: Strengthening Support Systems

Anxiety doesn’t exist in a vacuum and often affects relationships, daily life, and communication. Involving trusted family members or significant others in the healing process can help everyone better understand what anxiety looks like, what triggers it, and how to respond in more supportive, effective ways.

When loved ones are included, they can learn:

  • How anxiety shows up for you (thoughts, feelings, and behaviors)

  • What is and isn’t helpful in the moment

  • How to communicate effectively with more empathy

  • How to support healthy boundaries, coping skills, and treatment goals

This kind of shared understanding can reduce conflict, lessen feelings of isolation, and create a more stable, compassionate recovery environment.

Faithland offers family therapy and education sessions for family members and significant others when clients wish to include them as part of their recovery journey and support system.

Treatment Options for Anxiety at Faithland

1. Outpatient Treatment

Our outpatient program provides individualized therapy, holistic wellness support, and skills training while allowing clients to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities.

  • It includes individual counselling, customized therapy sessions, and support tailored to help people overcome anxiety disorders and, if relevant, co-occurring disorders and drug dependencies.
  • The program is suitable for people who have adequate emotional stability, a stable living environment, and motivation to engage in therapy.
  • Faithland offers a continuum of outpatient care, adapted to different needs and recovery stages: mild (OP), moderate (IOP) and intensive support (PHP, similar to inpatient programs)

2. Virtual Intensive Outpatient Therapy (VIOP)

Virtual Intensive Outpatient Therapy (VIOP) delivers anxiety treatment online through secure video sessions such as Zoom and digital tools, making it easier to recover from the comfort of home. It’s a flexible option for those needing high-quality clinical support while continuing to manage work, school, or family responsibilities.

3. Medication Management (When Appropriate)

For some clients, short-term or long-term medication can be an important part of the healing journey. For others, especially when dependence has developed, individualized medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may be needed to safely reduce use and support recovery.

Our clinical team provides:

  • Careful evaluation
  • Ongoing medication monitoring
  • Support with tapering or adjusting medications, when needed.
